Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] In the context of an increasingly marked pluralization of the welfare system, in particular starting from the 2008 crisis, mutualism is gaining weight, contributing to the processes of transformation and innovation of the Italian welfare system at different levels and in various areas. Why this growing relevance? How can we interpret the revival of experiences that seemed only a legacy of the past? What opportunities do they offer? What limits do they hold? The aim of this contribution is to answer these questions assuming as main contexts of analysis those studied by the empirical research presented in the previous chapters of the volume: municipal welfare, corporate welfare, community welfare; combining a reference to the forms of occupational neo-mutualism among the 'second generation' self-employed workers and dedicating a specific study to mutual aid societies (SMS) and their role in supplementary health care. The SMS represent a privileged point of view to bring to light some dynamics of innovation that from mutualism can be drawn for the future welfare, not without taking into adequate consideration the critical elements that emerge precisely from this privileged observation point.
