Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The monograph enters a field that is almost completely unexplored, yet rich in expressive potential: that of contemporary artistic windows for sacred buildings. To fully understand the true nature of the window, a real trait d'union between art and architecture, the studio offers a historical contextualization and analysis of the materials and techniques used. These premises reveal how the multi-faceted ability of the glass to filter natural light leads it to interact with space, changing its perception and often connoting it with new meanings. This is fully expressed in churches, where natural light is a sensitive manifestation of the divine one. The way in which light, filtered through the windows, interacts with the environment becomes an interpretative key with which to reread the architecture of the Milanese churches and a starting point for the conception of a sacred space. Thus was born the catalog of artistic stained-glass windows created in the second half of the twentieth century for nineteen churches in Milan, both historical buildings - such as the Duomo or S. Maria delle Grazie - that of recent construction - including S. Francesco d'Assisi al Fopponino by Gio Ponti. This catalog offers technical and critical information, as well as a complete photographic documentation included in the CD attached to the volume, which constitutes an interesting iconographic repertoire.
