Abstract
The article provides an overview of the theories of translation in the Eighteenth Century, with special attention to the British cultural context. Dryden's and Pope's approaches to translation are discussed, together with the theoretical speculation of Tytler, the first scholar to publish a theoretical treatise on translation in 1791.
