Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] "Every model of communication is at the time a model of translation, of vertical or horizontal transfer of meaning" (Steiner, Dopo Babele, p. 74). Steiner's statement is verifiable both in contemporary society, where translation can be define comeduplice communication between members of different linguistic systems, both in ancient Latin society, where it is the instrument of which rhetoricians, grammarians, philosophers and dramatists use to introduce the Greek tradition to Rome. This essay aims to propose a comparison between the Jakobsonian definitions of translation and communication and Cicero's approach, through the analysis of the terminology that the speaker uses in reference to his work as a translator
