Abstract
The relationships between text and images analyzed in 18th century encyclopedic works, from "Descriptions des arts et métiers”, to "Encyclopédie” and "Encyclopédie méthodique", illustrate the communicative effectiveness established in them between definition, explanation and visualisation. These practices contribute to the validation of terminologies as a means of transmitting technical and scientific knowledge: the case of engraving is an example of this fruitful language dynamic for visual and visualized conceptualization.
