Abstract

Starting from the apparently straying page (an optical experiment of formation of the complementary colour on the retina) Svevo inserted in the last chapter of Coscienza di Zeno, the essay reveals the artful strategy the protagonist resorted to in writing up his autobiographical diaries for doctor S.: after studying a psychoanalysis treatise, Zeno rereads his life in the light of the Oedipus complex, turning it into the colour of illness. However this is just the mirror image, in negative, of a character who, after purifying his whole life of all the false interpretations and bringing it back to the pure material data, is actually the winner, all the more so as compared to the wretched lot occurred to his rivals as to health, love, business.
