Abstract
The paper focuses on the first volume of the Parnasse Contemporain (1866), as an effective example of French poetry in the second half of the 19th century, and it analyses the cases of synonymy used in it. The study shows three manifestations of synonymy in this poetic text: periphrasis - which rephrases biblical, mythological, temporal and spatial, or simply descriptive data - iteratio synonymica – which has an explanatory or descriptive function – and genetic synonymy – virtual or actual.
