Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The comparison between the South and literature in the period from the unification of Italy to the present day, especially as far as
relates to the notion of History: a theme to which southern writers have proved particularly sensitive,
but which they elaborated in a contradictory and problematic way. What transpires from this investigation is that
Southern writers did not believe in history (understood in Vichian terms as a conquest of modernity and
progress), reaching the point of theorising its negation or bypassing it by taking refuge in utopia. Retracing the themes
crucial elements of Southernism - the Unification of 1861, the Southern Question, the transformations of society
industrial, emigration, the postmodern era - an interpretative key is offered here from which it emerges
a fact neglected by previous studies: with the exception of a few names, the intellectuals of the South have stopped
to denounce the facts, instead of building a design culture capable of redeeming or redeeming the humble.
