Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The events of the coup d'état of 411 show, through the interventions of the revolutionaries, the recourse to the language of continuity, certainly suited to convincing the people; the same language, pleasing to democratic public opinion, is used by the democratic counter-revolutionaries of Samos. In negotiations after the defeat of 404, a certain caution was highlighted by Teramene; but with the progress of the events Teramene speaks a harsher and more openly subversive language: having weakened the Athenian resistance and eliminated the opposing leaders, he appears much less worried about consensus. With the advent of the Thirty the problem shifts from how to establish an oligarchic government to how to maintain it. Teramene intends to guarantee stability to the regime with the implementation of a propaganda capable of guaranteeing a consensus; Crizia instead promotes an open tyranny, to be exercised unscrupulously, and fully accepts the prospect of subversion. The reference to the observance of the archaioi nomoi by Trasibulo after returning to Athens once again proposes the true democratic continuity, that of democracy as patrios politeia of Athens: as proof of the fall of the Thirties, as in the case of the counter-revolution of Samo. that the heart of the debate, in the alternative continuity / subversion, concerned the correct interpretation, or abuse, of the Athenian constitutional tradition.
