Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Between the second half of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century Adolfo Mussafia was a fundamental bridge figure between the new German Wissenschaft and the Italian cultural and academic world. On this basis, for the first time this contribution publishes and contextualizes both the nine letters and three postcards sent by the Split Roman scholar to Francesco Novati (Milan, National Braidense Library, Novati correspondence; Milan, Library of the Lombard Historical Society, Novati collection), and the responses (nine letters and a postcard) of the co-founder of the «Historical Journal of Italian Literature» (Florence, Humanistic Library of the University, Mussafia collection). The friendship between Mussafia, linguist-philologist, and Novati, philologist of the "historical school", fuels the scientific collaboration. For example, the examinations of Ambrosian codices conducted by Novati were used by Mussafia for his Mariological studies which culminated in the monumental series of Marienlegenden, 1886-1898, I-V. In turn, Novati published a new prose version of the facetious story De lumaca et Lombardo upon the recommendation of his correspondent, who provided him with copies of two Viennese manuscripts. Ultimately, the analysis of the unpublished correspondence allows on the one hand to add further pieces to the biography and scientific activity of the two scholars, and on the other to highlight aspects of European intellectual life at the turn of the two centuries.
