Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The essay traces the controversy that developed between 1584 and 1590 between supporters of "Orlando furioso" and defenders of "Gerusalemme liberata", starting from the publication of Camillo Pellegrino's "Carrafa". Among others, Lionardo Salviati, member of the Crusca Academy, the philosopher Francesco Patrizi and Torquato Tasso himself participated in the discussion. The contribution analyzes the most important topics debated in the dispute, which insists on some fundamental motifs in the theoretical-critical horizon of the second sixteenth century, in some cases managing to offer significant contributions: poetry and history; the true, the plausible and the false; unity of action; language and style; the ethical quality of the characters
