Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The phrase "educational poverty", introduced in Italy by Save the Children in 2014 and subsequently translated by the same non-profit organization as "educational poverty" in the international context, has had some success on the political and institutional level in the Italian context, helping to catalyze the attention to the poverty of minors and, in particular, to immaterial ones. It is used to designate a complex set of phenomena, however from a pedagogical point of view there is no critical examination that makes its latent meanings emerge. In the context of the complex relationship between minors and poverty, the essay traces the origins and development of the construct of "educational poverty", describing its current use and also trying to point out dimensions that are still unexpressed. Although it comes from the sphere of economic and social disciplines, the term "educational poverty" unequivocally challenges pedagogical reflection, evidently referring to dimensions that are exquisitely relevant to the world of education. In addition, some directions of meaning are outlined that are useful for defining the spectrum of the different "educational poverty" (the plural is a must here) and the possible ways to prevent and combat them.
