Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The dispute up to the refusal of the authority is one of the legacies of the second half of the 1900s. Moment in which the affirmation of the individualistic spirit has accused the pillars on which the social order rested: tradition, country, family, school, church. That drawing has largely been realized. Yet, if it is true that it is difficult to find safe harbors in which to anchor it, it is also true that, like the phoenix, authority constantly rises from its ashes. Reconstituting itself in new forms, more fleeting and indeterminate than in the past, but no less problematic for this. Especially if they are continually confused with power. Helping to create that sense of confusion that characterizes our common contemporary condition. Thus the authority, leaving the door, returns through the window, in a disorderly and shapeless way. Who then should we look to? It is not a question of going back, as some imagine. Rather, it is a question of moving forward, reflecting again on a term that remains essential and at the same time difficult. A world without authority is not possible, if not at the cost of losing freedom. If anything, the problem remains that of thinking about authority differently. Recognizing its essential role as a connector between those who come first and those who come after (and not only in a temporal sense). From this point of view, authority can be seen as a structure, a door which, while framing - thus defining a direction - at the same time opens to a future that does not yet exist but which does not start from nowhere.
