Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The contribution addresses the theme of the polychromy of non-figured elements in Greek and Roman sculpture. In particular, the color choices relating to the props of marble statues (i.e. simple structural supports without figurative decoration) and backgrounds in reliefs (the areas of a relief that do not contain figurative decoration) are discussed. Thanks to a limited selection of significant examples, historiographical and methodological aspects relating to the study of their color are explored in depth elements, in an attempt to formulate direction proposals and define the essential coordinates for a full integration of the problem within the studies on the figurative culture of the classical world. In the case of the props, the color does not seem necessarily linked to the desire to make the static infrastructure of the statue invisible; the polychromy rather seems intended to differentiate or underline different parts of the work. Instead, it is possible to recognize significant and coherent color preferences for backgrounds in different eras, even in associations apparently linked to the theme of the composition.
