Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The release of three encyclicals (Mit brennender Sorge, Divini Redemptoris, Firmissimam constantiam) within two weeks in March 1937, a fact more unique than rare in history, testified to the determination with which Pius XI, at the time recovering after a long illness that had immobilized him for months, he intended to face the various challenges posed to the Church by the anti-Christian ideologies of the time, by the racist neo-paganism that in Germany advocated a national Church and a "positive Christianity" purified from its Jewish roots, to the Mexican anti-clericalism of social and educational reforms inspired by an exacerbated secularism and a socialism with rather confused outlines, passing naturally through communism, whose pernicious effects in the eyes of Pope Achille Ratti had become evident both in Mexico and in civil war-torn Spain.
