Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The way citizens become involved in political life is profoundly and rapidly changing and political communication through the Internet plays an important role in this change. Some features of this communication favor the use of fast and intuitive ways of thinking which, despite having different advantages, in some cases can increase the risks of manipulation of citizens by political, economic and media elites. These risks are diminished by the possibility that citizens, when useful, resort to slower and more reflective ways of thinking. These two ways of thinking have effects on the type of political participation. We will see how the prevalent, if not exclusive, use of fast-thinking methods favors forms of political participation, which are more unstable, instinctive and uncritical, while the use of slow-thinking methods also favors forms of participation that are more lasting over time, aware and critical. These forms of participation can be made more probable also thanks to strategies implemented by the citizens themselves, but also by the media and politics.
