Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] How to narrate the last hours of life of a writer, Honoré de Balzac, whose existence is as boundless as the work he created, La Commedia Umana? Octave Mirbeau composed Balzac's Death by grafting an unlikely end to proven facts. While the sublime author of Daddy Goriot exhaled his last breath, in the room next door Madame Hanska, his most sensual bride, was according to Mirbeau in pleasant company ... of his lover, the painter Jean Gigoux. These absurd pages caused such a scandal that the author was forced to censor them when their publication had already been announced to the press. Rediscovered in France in the eighties of the last century, Balzac's death has not ceased to arouse the opposing reactions of critics as much as those of readers. In the afterword, Davide Vago delves into the reasons that led Mirbeau to pay Balzac a daring death, in which literary fiction appears more truthful than any biographical truth.
