[Autom. eng. transl.] In Europe the third sector has for years been the protagonist of profound transformations attributable both to the organizational and cultural dynamics within the organizations, and to the institutional, political and social changes that have occurred within the various national contexts. These changes, particularly those that can be observed in Germany, England, Spain, Ireland, Croatia and Italy, are at the center of the sociological reflection of this issue of the magazine. The reconstruction of the individual national cases followed the temporal development of the third sector, with particular regard to the social functions it carries out, offering answers to social needs, to relations with public and private market interlocutors, to the role played in local social policies. In the light of the different historical, cultural, social and relational characteristics that characterize the various national contexts, the essays contained here allow us to identify the peculiarities of the presence of the third sector at international level, its distinctive contribution, the qualifying traits and those of criticality . In particular, scholars have been very careful in identifying in an innovative and critical way the phenomenologies that indicate both the aspects of re-dimensioning and those of strengthening of a social sector in profound transformation.
