Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The production of the mints of Melita and Gaulos has aroused interest since the start of modern historiographical research on the Maltese archipelago. However, at the end of the nineteenth century the foundations were laid for the scientific study of this coinage. The article by Edward Coleiro, "Maltese Coins of the Roman Period", published in 1971 on the "Numismatic Chronicle", represents today the fundamental reference study. The purpose of the essay is to highlight the limits of the tight chronological scan proposed by the Maltese scholar. After outlining the historical framework in which the melitense and Gaulitan coinage (CP) are inserted, the weighted, chronological, iconographic and epigraphic aspects of the series coined at Melita (MN) and Gaulos (CP) are discussed, highlighting the points that cannot be shared with the summary proposed by Coleiro. In the last part, CP proposes to insert the coinage of the two islands into the economic context of the Maltese archipelago, as it has emerged thanks to the most recent archaeological investigations.
