Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] «Short century», «era of hopes and tragedies», «age of the end of ideologies». There are many definitions of the twentieth century in the third millennium, in that enigmatic and indecipherable geography that is the postmodern. Demonized or sanctified, blamed or acquitted, it has marked an epochal turning point in the economy and politics, it has affected the cultural and social fabric of our country, breaking age-old balances, shattering the line of continuity between past and future. Until the decisive leap: the decline of peasant civilization and the advent of industrialization. Through turning points and phenomena of Italian history Giuseppe Lupo, a passionate scholar of the economic boom season, retraces the "interpretative paradigm of the modern", giving voice to its most representative figures, from Vittorini to Testori, from Fortini to Mastronardi, from Calvino to Pasolini. Shedding light on the controversial relationship between humanism and science in the factory narrative and in the company periodicals of the post-war period - from Donnarumma to the assault by Ottiero Ottieri to Paolo Volponi's Memorial, from the magazine "Pirelli" to "Civiltà delle Macchine" - he arrives at the today's "liquid realism", dominated by the end of that proletariat which once seemed to march together and today instead seems fragile and obsolete. If ordinary people and intellectual elites have often reacted with unease and distrust to the fluctuations and problems that the wind of progress has brought with them, perhaps the time has come to reverse course. To bring back from the subsoil in which an original, alternative, design re-reading of modernity has remained hidden, which aspires to change the world, to "sever the umbilical cord with the terrible and majestic century of which we still feel like children".
