Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The memory of Clare of Assisi experienced several downturns depending on the reception environments; at the Protomonastery of Assisi, an alternative memory to that diffused by the papal hagiography was preserved for a long time, as is also visible from the 'altarpiece of s. Chiara '. At the beginning of the 15th century the Poor Clares who turned to the friars of the Observance sought to recover their origins and, above all, the life form of Chiara, approved only for the monastery of S. Damiano. The struggle of the religious, generally endowed with a good culture, sometimes took on violent tones, as evidenced by the "Ricordanze" of the monastery of S. Lucia di Foligno (1536), which were written precisely to leave the memory of the obstacles they had to the future nuns be overcome to be able to follow the form of life of Clare and not the rule of Urban IV (1263) for the monasteries of the Order of s. Chiara. A visible sign of this recovery of Chiara's memory was a 'new' iconography of the saint, this time with a book in her hands, in which the nuns could also recognize her rule.
