Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The season is 1959/60, the place is the first Italian building: the Piccolo in Milan, the director is the promising Mario Missiroli in his official debut, the protagonist is the now famous Franca Valeri, who interrupted a long Parisian tour for this commitment: to stage the first text for the theater written by Giovanni Testori, the third volume of those Secrets of Milan that are causing a sensation and will lead to the Arialda affair with a lot of seals imposed by the magistrate in Milan. Maria Brasca is not only an opportunistic choice in a financing policy that favors Italian novelties, nor just (which is already a lot!) A provocation to rigid and respectable morality and to the myopic idea of art that permeate the public and criticism of a city that, after the "Romanization" of cinema and theater, is finding its revenge. The Maria Brasca is also a formidable test of actress and the happy landing in a writing, that for the theater, which Testori immediately grasps in its specificities of word-action and spoken word. Propose the documentation of that show, which is, in the first and most suggestive place, rich photographic memory, but then also testimony of protagonists, recovery of correspondences, accounts and reports, sketches and lists of customs, and comparison with the problems of censorship, means proposing to the reader (young and not so young) almost a plunge into a past that is as far as important to resume and understand also to understand the today of a theater, a city, a country that are in a crucial moment and do not cease to need, to reflect and question themselves, even the magical perimeter of a scene whose fiction is nothing but the unraveling of reality.
