Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The geopolitics of the Spanish language could be traced back to the Conquest. In this historical phase, in fact, the reading of the juridical formula of the Requerimiento claims, and succeeded, to subject men and lands to the Empire of the Catholic Kings, laying the foundations for what would later be constituted as la ciudad letrada: the center neuralgic of power delimited by the possession of the dominant linguistic code. With the 1492 the Castilian - that in the Iberian peninsula had imposed itself thanks to the Reconquista, and therefore through another political action - it became the language of the power, with the peculiarity to be the only element of union between identity that for customs, traditions , language and perception of the world were different and conflicting. From a dominant position, the Castilian sanctioned the predominance of the Iberian component over the different for centuries, but this situation has been modified thanks to the claims carried forward through language and literature. Recent history shows, in fact, that the pervasive force of the Spanish language has not changed and indeed, where Hispanic speaking groups have been able to stabilize Spanish has become a lingua franca, capable of allowing emigrant groups to conquer spaces of significant recognition. In contrast to the idea of language that had been developing in the centuries preceding the struggles for the independence of the colonies, the geopolitics of the Spanish language has changed almost in the perspective with which the notions that revolve around the language manage to legitimize the policies language. In actuality, if in the Iberian peninsula the struggle for the recognition of linguistic identities has been characterized by a transfer of land by the Spanish in favor of a greater autonomy of the languages of each autonomous community, on the Latin American front the geopolitics of Spanish is it outlines in the recognition and pervasive conquest of communication spaces in which it becomes a lingua franca even outside the national limits. Here we propose to explain this contrast and take note of the most significant phenomena linked to the linguistic policies in Spain and Latin America.
