Abstract
The article focuses one of the best known and exalted episodes of the war between Spain and England ranging from 1585 to 1604, namely the expedition that Francis Drake led against the harbour of Cádiz in April and May 1587. On the basis of hitherto unpublished documents, found in some Italian archives, and compared with other already known testimonies, both of Spanish and English source, the article proposes an interpretation of this episode considerably different from the one which is well established among historiographers, mainly of Anglo-Saxon origin.
