Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] During the 19th century, the concept of “author's punctuation” asserted itself. At the end of the century, when “white punctuation” began to appear, Jules Laforgue explored the disruptive and expressive possibilities of the more traditional “black punctuation”. In this article, we will analyze the poet's relationship with punctuation marks, showing that they participate in the semantic level of his "clownish writing". In particular, at the time of the Complaints and the Imitation of Our Lady of the Moon, punctuation created a form of “typographic gesticulation” which was modeled on the Pierrot of pantomimes.
