Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The article outlines the outstanding moments in the history of surgery, such as the discovery of anesthesia, asepsis and antisepsis that have allowed its rise after centuries of darkness. The desire for knowledge satisfied by such discoveries has frequently been accompanied by ethical dilemmas, on the one hand, and by ideological resistance on the part of the scientific community (often hostile to the genesis of the new in medicine), on the other hand. This is one of the most serious obstacles that the great ones of the past, those who have had the courage to go against the current (breaking the existing paradigms), have had to overcome. These men represent a stimulus to lead scientific knowledge into an active confrontation with ethics in order to heal a dichotomy that has ancient roots. The old, therefore, is not simply past but is revived through the historical narrative of exemplary lives of doctors
