Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Depressive symptomatology is an often underestimated problem in the elderly and hospitalization can aggravate or de-emphasize it, thus interfering negatively with the outcome of rehabilitation treatments. On the contrary, resilience, understood as the ability to resist adverse events such as hospitalization, is important to obtain a satisfactory functional recovery through rehabilitation. The objective of this prospective observational study is to investigate the relationships between resilience and rehabilitation intervention in patients who have undergone post-acute orthopedic surgery. At the entrance to the ward and before discharge to each patient (N = 84; average age = 74.5, DS = 8), of which socio-demographic data and psychopathological and pharmacological history were recorded, the following tools were applied: Resilience Scale, WHO Quality of Life, Multidimensional Prognostic Index, Functional Independence Measure. The analysis of the scores obtained in the two moments and their correlations show that patients with high resilience and greater psychosocial and physical well-being at the entrance obtain greater functional independence at discharge. The study suggests that an accurate evaluation of patients with early identification of possible depressive symptoms and their treatment is important in order to improve their condition and collaboration within the rehabilitation process.
