Abstract

The book considers two concepts – education and development – from an historical point of view. It sheds light on the “double overturn” of perspective that has taken place among these two concepts during the last fifty years. The result is the centrality given today both at a national and international level to education (and continuous training) as a crucial resource for economic, productive, occupational, and social development. However, the complexity of the links between the investment in human capital and the outcome of this investment (in terms of higher employment, well-being, wealth, social cohesion, and competitiveness) has been emerging. The illusion of a functionalistic relationship falls apart and the need for a multidimensional analysis comes to the surfaces. Particularly, the importance of the sociological approach to explain that complexity comes to light.
