[Autom. eng. transl.] Higher Technical Education and Training, established experimentally in 1999, is now preparing to find a place within the Italian educational context, at a time characterized by significant changes in the education and vocational training system. The challenge launched by Ifts is played starting from its innovative characteristics: the centrality of integration, attention to the needs of the local labor market, the possibility of customizing the paths based on the needs of the students, the articulation by competences , the varied users, the study-work alternation. But is it possible to derive a training model from this experimentation? What are the strengths to enhance? What are the elements that have proven to have a significant impact on the world of work? The volume, which collects the results of the empirical research conducted between 2003 and 2004 on the Ifts in Lombardy, tries to answer these questions. The data relating to the experimentation are presented and the point of view of the actors who, for various reasons, have been involved in the IFTS are analyzed: institutional training managers, ex-trainees, managing bodies, teachers, companies and trade associations. The analysis was conducted with two fires in mind: on the one hand, the impact of the Ifts on the world of work and, on the other, their experimental nature, with the highlighting of the most interesting aspects to be valued in the perspective of a development of higher education and training.
