Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Pier Damiani (1007-1072) is among the best-known intellectuals and writers of the 11th century and is, by virtue of his biography, a privileged observer of the changes in the surrounding reality in one of the most troubled periods in the history of the church. His closeness to the emperor Henry III and contextually to the reforming popes, his appointment as cardinal bishop in 1057, his function as legate in very delicate contexts (such as Milan, Florence and Cluny) put him in relation with the most famous personalities of the century and in particular with the bishops of the Regnum. Questioning the very rich collection of letters from Damiano brings out Pier Damiani's thoughts on the figure of the bishop and allows us to recover an extraordinary amount of information on all the prelates with whom the Avellanita came into contact during her life. The epistolae are a major historical source for reconstructing a bishop's speculum for the 11th century and suggesting original perspectives on the political and social dynamics of a period of profound transformation.
