[Autom. eng. transl.] The first part of the volume presents the symbolic relational approach, developed in recent years by the group of sociologists and psychologists of the Center for Studies and Research on the Family, which constituted the hypothesis guiding the work of the Conference. Here are the contributions presented within the different sections in which the research data are intertwined with the experiences of psycho-social operators engaged in direct work with families. In particular the themes of the family are dealt with in the face of the crucial transitions of its path: the stipulation of the marital pact and its critical passages (especially the case of separation and divorce); the transition to parenthood (also with reference to the hot topic of assisted procreation), focusing on the educational function of families with small children, even in problematic situations; forms of social parenting, such as family custody and adoption; the transition to adult life, from the adolescent phase to the "long" family; the middle generation; grandparent-grandchild relations and forms of intergenerational solidarity in the family with elderly people. Finally, a specific area is reserved for the social policy guidelines for the family, childcare services and family associations.
