La educación como bien público y común: Reformular la gobernanza de la educación en un contexto cambiante

[Autom. eng. transl.] The concept of education as a public good has long been a fundamental principle of the international discourse on the development of education. Traditionally, it has held the primary responsibility of public institutions to deliver and finance educational opportunities. However, this function is increasingly questioned by the greater diversification of the agents involved and of the sources of financing at all levels of education. This document reviews the principle of education as a public good in light of current trends in the privatization and commodification of education. Taking into account both the economic and political implications of privatization, the theoretical debate on education in the public sphere is reformulated. Based on the need to restore a democratic space for participation, it is argued that the concept of education as a common good can represent a useful complementary framework for its governance in a changing context.
