Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Why is it worth remembering? What to remember and what to forget? And how to remember? For decades now, these questions have been at the center of a wide debate that has also involved medieval research. In fact, memory is recognized as one of the constitutive elements for the foundation of individual and collective identity. Just as it happens on a subjective level, the construction of one's link with the other is also formed not only by identifying common experiences and expectations but also by defining and preserving those memories considered fundamental because they are useful for orientation in the present. The destruction inflicted by the emperor Frederick I Barbarossa in Milan in the spring of 1162 certainly represents one of these founding memories for Milan, for Italy but also for Germany itself. Projected continuously into the collective imagination, reworked by cultural elites as a "place of memories", that is to say a creative laboratory of identity, over the centuries the image of the destruction of the city and its author has assumed ever different meanings , adapting to the different historical-political and cultural contexts in which it was recalled. The volume, which contains the proceedings of a Study Day jointly organized by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan and the Deutsches Historisches Institut of Rome in December 2012, seeks to retrace the history of this "place of memories" from the Middle Ages to the present day, bringing into dialogue the two worlds that were the protagonists of the events: Milan, Italy and the German world. Through texts, monuments, images - the mediators par excellence of this memory - it emerges how the past is in reality, for every generation, always new.
