Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Literature has long considered child abuse to be a chronic relational trauma with important psychopathological consequences in terms of both disorganized attachment and post-traumatic symptoms and cognitive, behavioral and social impairments. The present study therefore proposes a twofold objective: the first is to verify any differences in the type of attachment bond and in post-traumatic symptomatology in children victims of established violence and in children of a control group belonging and economically disadvantaged families ; the second objective is to explore, in the only group of children victims of violence, if the disorganization of the attachment plays the role of mediator in the association between type of violence and post-traumatic symptomatology. The clinical group consists of 47 children (29 males), victims of established domestic violence with an average age of 11.4 years (DS = 2.5); the control group of 59 children (32 males) with an average age of 12.9 years (DS = 1.2), belonging to disadvantaged normo-constituted groups. The results confirm that victimization experiences imbued with threats to physical integrity and persistent feelings of terror and impotence are important predictors of disorganized attachment which, in turn, is an important explanatory key to post-traumatic symptoms. It is indeed plausible to believe that the MOIs of disorganized children, characterized both by simultaneous or rapid sequences of self and attachment figures according to the three positions of the victim, persecutor and savior, both from serious deficiencies in metacognitive monitoring and from Dysregulation of emotions can be seen as important explanatory mechanisms of the symptoms (anxious, depressive, anger, dissociative and post-traumatic) detected.
