[Autom. eng. transl.] The conflict between the State and the Church in revolutionary Mexico, especially in the years of the so-called Cristero or Cristiada war, became since the end of the fifties the object of a rigorous and systematic scientific investigation, the results of which have given rise to the passage from time to a vast literature. In this historiographic production, the decisive role played by the Holy See in the complex events of the Mexican Church was initially rebuilt from Mexican and American diplomatic and ecclesiastical sources that, while on the one hand have allowed clarifying the decisions taken in Rome to resolve The Mexican conflict, which reached overseas through various channels, on the other does not allow a thorough investigation of the complex preceding process, the result of the debate (often conflicting) between the multiple voices of the Curia. The opening of the Vatican archives on the pontificate of Achille Ratti (Pius XI, 1922-1939), held in September 2006, now makes it possible to fill what, perhaps still today, remains the main gap in studies on the argument, evidenced by some of the historians who have dealt with this subject.
