Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The problem of improper access to the emergency department is relevant in the Italian context. A survey conducted in 2010 shows that the average percentage of improper accesses in our country is around 24.18%, reaching 80% in some hospitals. The inappropriateness of access to the emergency room leads to conditions of overcrowding, long waits and inconvenience to patients with greater criticality, as well as high costs for the citizen and an overload of work and stress for doctors and nurses. Patients over the age of 65 represent about 20% of the total visits to the emergency room, a percentage that is constantly increasing. The specific objective of this research is to understand the variables that are involved in the decision to go or not to the emergency room in this segment of the population. The sample taken into consideration is composed of 150 subjects aged between 58 and 85 (M = 72.06; DS = 7.52) attending universities of the third age or aggregation centers for the elderly, who were given the following self-tools report: the Cognitive Closure Need Scale (BCC, Webster & Kruglanski, 1990); the State-trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI, Spielberger, Gorsuch, Lushene, Vagg & Jacobs, 1983); the 16 Health Literacy Screening Question (Lisa, Chew, Katharine, Bradley, Edward & Boyko; 2004) and a questionnaire created specifically to investigate the motivations and level of health literacy. The results showed that the sample examined has a good level of health literacy, although there are difficulties in understanding specific aspects of the operation of the emergency department. The majority of the sample indicates the lack of alternative solutions for the elderly, as their own doctor or medical guard are not perceived as figures able to help the subject in a professional and timely manner.
