Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] If Edvard Munch's art is known throughout the world, his texts are still a secret for the general public. However, when his words appear alongside his works, as happens in this book, it immediately becomes clear that one completes and clarifies the other, and that the knowledge of the artist through his texts allows you to enter the heart of his work. Munch wrote all his life: notes, notebooks, diaries, prose poems, literary sketches, travel notes, articles and, of course, letters. Tormented and brilliant genius, Munch therefore gave shape to his thoughts and emotions not only in unforgettable paintings, but also in literary texts full of lyricism, in which the considerations on art in general and on his work in particular are accompanied by the story of environments and characters who left a deep imprint on his exceptional sensitivity. Munch considers art as an immersion in the secrets of the human soul: "in my art - he wrote - I tried to explain life and its meaning to myself", trying at the same time to "help others to clarify your own ". Writing, painting and engraving are tiles of a unitary design, aimed at telling the dance of life in all its expressions. From this desire for unity, the project to create a large pictorial cycle, The frieze of life, was also born, which would hold his works together in a single discourse. In fact, Munch believed that his paintings, often considered obscure and difficult to read, would be more understandable if presented side by side, "as when there are many violins in a room, the note on which they are harmonized is played and then they all play ». The texts collected in this book help to reconstruct the melody of his painting, allowing you to grasp the richness of the artist's human and creative universe and illuminating his works, the best known and least known, with a new light.
