Abstract
The study of the diffusion and the statement of Christianity in a rural area can benefit from the results of the parallel analysis of written sources and archaeological evidences. The article starts from the enumeration of the rural churches in the Seprio area mentioned in the written sources preceding 1000 AD; we discuss briefly the contents, the characteristics and the informative potential for the archaeological research of this documentation. Possible archaeological evidences about these churches are the subject of a specific examination in order to improve - where possible - the current knowledge about their chronological, topographical, contextual, religious and social issues; more generally, the aim is to contribute to a better definition of the issues; more generally, the aim is to contribute to a better definition of the issue of the Christianization in the Seprio area in the Early Middle Ages.
