Abstract

At the end of the Second World War several cases and packages of books, stored at the Hotel “Principe e Savoia” in Milan, presumably belonging to the German government, were confiscated as “enemy state property” by the Allied Military Government, which soon afterwards entrusted the National Library of Brera with their custody. A few hundreds of them, mostly 19th century editions of German and, to a smaller extent, European Literature, stand out for having the following same ex-libris: “Deutscher Sprachverein in Mailand”. Founded in 1887/88, this institution soon became the very centre of the German Community in Milan until World War I. This essay explores through a rich and mostly new documentation the history of the “German language society” and its library, paying special attention to the economic and cultural background of Milan at the turn of the century. A complete list of the books belonging to the ex-“Deutscher Sprachverein”, now at the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense, and a biographical sketch of their donors close this study.
