Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The chapter identifies as the main discontinuity in relations between the European Union and the United States during the Trump administration the unusual type of public diplomacy conducted by the President, characterized by the reduction of direct communication to the public - both foreign and domestic - to the same conflictual dialectic often traced back to the somewhat indeterminate category of "populism". The application of Karl W. Deutsch's transactional approach to the media ecology that underlies the current North Atlantic security community - characterized by the presence of new communication technologies - allows us to identify in the "populist communication logic" the factor that it allows us to understand the way in which Donald Trump participated in the affirmation of forces hostile to the inter-, trans- and supranational integration processes that have guaranteed conditions of peace and cooperation since the end of the Second World War.
