Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The Italian situation for scientific and technological research in reflections on our international competitiveness is examined here in three respects: the first concerns the benchmarking of Italian research and innovation in the world context; the second the research and innovation policies of our country; the third is the internationally successful national models in advanced science-technology sectors. In emergonio strategic guidelines to promote the "third Italian economic miracle": one based on the qualification of the university system and the research system also to promote collaboration with the "industrial districts", made up of small and medium enterprises, and with the "pillars industrial ", made by large companies. From the early 1970s to the present, Italy has had a "second economic miracle" supported by competitive SMEs. The challenge is now, in the era of the euro that Italy has also meritoriously achieved, that of a dimensional growth of companies and of a collaboration between small and medium-sized enterprises, industrial pillars and universities. Crucial to this end will be research, scientific and technological innovation, flexibility of production factors and markets
