Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] On the occasion of the International Year of Biodiversity (2010) the "Sernagiotto" seed collection was presented: it is a veritable treasure trove of biodiversity containing the seeds of 1,100 species of cultivated and weed plants. Prepared at the beginning of 1900, the collection is kept at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Piacenza. From a botanical point of view, it is a collection of seeds and fruits in a huge variety of shapes, colors, surfaces and structures for dissemination. They range from microscopic seeds, such as those of tobacco and mint, to rather voluminous seeds, such as those of pumpkin, beans, castor and corn. This volume presents the photographic reproduction of the 11 centuries of seeds accompanied by the anastatic one of the general index and the booklet with the botanical and agronomic characteristics of each species.
