Abstract
Between the summer of 1908 and the beginning of 1912 Guido Gozzano worked on an unfinished short poem, “Le Farfalle“, which expresses in verse his passion for collecting and for entomology. Shortly after, in 1914, Camillo Sbarbaro published “Pianissimo“, where the first traces of scientific study are combined with the impulse for collection, innervating the entire production of the poet: Sbarbaro is interested in lichens, «inconspicuous», «neglected» organisms, yet characterized by a tenacious polymorphism, equal to that of butterflies. What we want to demonstrate here is how the collection, as an organizational system of the elements of reality, shapes themes and formal structures of the authors’ poetry. The collection becomes an epistemological method to explore reality in its totality, at least potential, through the individual selected specimens. These elements take on the significance of universal symbols.
