Abstract
This book brings together a series of contributions, which have already appeared elsewhere and are presented here in an updated version, outlining the fundamental features of the inspirational culture underlying the welfare system in early modern Italy. The second part then dwells on the reality of the Milanese and Lombardy case. Particular emphasis is given to the networks of protection intertwined with confraternal associationism, in the various forms that the underlying religious matrix could take as it came into contact with the diversified complexity of social reality (devout confraternities, for 'national' groups, with charitable aims, confraternities of beggars, 'profane' corporate structures).
