Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The critical examination of the published documentation makes it possible to reconstruct the main events of the bishops of Parma between the ninth and eleventh centuries. The close link between the imperial court and the Parma bishopric allowed the rise of the city within the framework of the regnum Italie: not only did the bishops receive important privileges and prerogatives, especially in the tenth century, but they often carried out the task of chancellors for the kingdom Italy. Also for these intense exchanges with the imperial court, the schools of the cathedral of Parma soon assumed great importance, on this side and beyond the Alps. In particular the chapter of the cathedral, during the prolonged periods of absence of the bishops, committed to the service of the kings, carried out fundamental tasks of government of the diocese, even coming to stand in contrast with the bishop. In the thirteenth century, with the settlements of the mendicant Orders in Parma, for which we have the exceptional testimony of Salimbene from Parma, the Emilian city becomes the center of important peace initiatives that involve the whole of Po Valley (in particular the Alleluia) . Many citizens undertake the penitential life they enter the new Orders
