Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The idea of addressing the issue of conflict and the relationship with the other may appear in the case of the self-styled Islamic State (IS), in Arabic Dawla al-Islamiyya or even Dawla Islamiyya fi Iraq wa Sham (Islamic State in Iraq and in the levante - Isis or Daish) a purely rhetorical, almost tautological exercise. In fact, the load of violence that underlies IS activity and its expansionist desire against everything and everyone are the aspects that most characterize the action of the movement led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi - this also in light of the fact that for Is the distinction between adversary (inimicus) and enemy (hostis) does not in itself have any value. A minimally shared social or political space is not actually recognized within which to grant the other a real right of existence, outside of submission and stripping. This is also true with regard to the same Muslim dimension, as demonstrated by the continuous use of the takfir instrument, and for the same other actors in the jihadist galaxy not willing to recognize the authority of the "new Caliph". It is evident that any diversity, otherness or opposition is internal to the world to which these subjects refer, that, a fortiori, outside it is interpreted according to the size of the enemy and never as an adversary. An enemy to whom no hesitation or pity is granted. The analysis aims to deepen the relationship that Is established between the enemy, in its multiple faces, and the dimension of media communication, focusing on the definition of who is really the object of the violence of this group and why it was included in the hostis category. In fact, even more than the actual results achieved in the field, Is managed to forcefully resonate its message through the able representation of the enemy, humiliated and defeated. Moreover, in being able to effectively nurture this relationship, IS was able to synchronize its activity by combining local, regional and international dimensions, while supporting a campaign to recruit and spread terror on all available levels.
