Abstract
On the basis of recent historiography, the essay aims to focus on the main tasks assumed by the bishops, with a particular focus on the Italian peninsula, starting from the fifth-sixth century. The bishop, strongly linked to the city, seat of his cathedra and centre of the diocese, became the interlocutor of the kingdom, with recognised functions of government over its concives, was seen as the guarantor of internal peace in the city and, above all, as the defender of the poor and the weakest, especially orphans and widows. Finally, two significant cases of these episcopal attitudes relating to the diocese of Bologna are briefly examined: Gerardo de Gisla, a promoter of the works of piety and new forms of religiosity, and Niccolò Albergati, active in the reform of the clergy and in the care and education of the less well-off.
