Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The essay studies the communication via Twitter of the candidates for the presidency of Lombardy and Lazio on the theme of immigration and racism. 3830 tweets produced by candidates and their related lists are analyzed in the campaign for the 2018 Regionals (together with the speeches of Twitter users around the candidates' campaign). The study concerns the content of the texts and images, the networks around the candidates, the sources. For many candidates, coverage of migration issues was influenced by news reports and by competitors' statements. The theme of race and racism, launched before the campaign by Attilio Fontana and then taken up by his opponents, has become an important topic. The analysis reveals a disengagement from policies on the one hand and a strong polarization on the dimension of culture and values on the other.
