Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The essay takes into consideration the processes of communication and legitimization of the dominion of the first Visconti, from the last quarter of the XIII up to the middle of the XIV century. The lineage mostly implemented three strategies in order to legitimize its government over the city of Milan: the achievement of the archiepiscopal office of the Lombard metropolis, the assumption of ordinary and extraordinary municipal magistracies, the achievement of the imperial vicariate. The wise use of these instruments allowed the original aspects of the Visconti domination to be concealed in terms of continuity. In particular, through the analysis of literary texts, iconographic programs and civic rituals, the contribution delves into the set of symbolic symbols and actions with which Ottone and Giovanni Visconti legitimized Visconti hegemony over Milan and the other subdued cities: they referred to to the tradition of the Ambrosian episcopal chair and the local city churches, introducing however significant propagandistic innovations intended to strengthen the stately and dynastic dimension of the Visconti.
