Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] For those involved in the popularization of mathematics, the figure of John Horton Conway is essential: on the one hand one is fascinated by the academic who has made important contributions in various areas, on the other one appreciates the light-heartedness of the inventor of mathematical games, which may constitute a possible approach to a subject that has always frightened the general public. The network offers detailed lists of Conway's contributions; in this article it was decided to present two, one more strictly related to pure mathematics (but with possible applications still to be explored) and one instead on the side of recreational mathematics. These are, respectively, the Monster group and the Game of Life, on which the title of the article was also modeled.
